Our Christian Education Program
is for people of all ages, from nursery to adults.
Sunday School meets on Sunday mornings at 10:30 am.from Sept.
through May, and typically begins in the Sanctuary. After the
children's story, the children
continue their program in the classrooms where they are lead
by a core of dedicate teachers.
Children's Sunday was May 23, 2010.
CHRISTIAN EDUCATION
Excerpts from what Chris Stevens shared in worship on Children’s
Sunday, Pentecost, May 23rd and the Chair of Christian Ed. wrote:
“It’s that time of year already, when Sunday School is brought to
an end for the season. It ‘s been a crazy ride ... which really isn’t
any different than any other year, except we do have a few different players.
“... we had to say good-bye to Amy & John and their mom Lisa,
when the family moved to Hamilton. But ... we gained not two but four new members.
Dana and Jason (and mom Jessica) joined our little group, and then came Molly
and Ryan (and their parents Christine and Doug).
“A few months ago Amy wrote to tell us that she missed us. She said, “It’s
weird not going to Sunday School every Sunday, doing lessons of some sort, listening
to a children’s story and snagging cookies from the counter.” I thought
that was a perfect description....
“This year we talked about the direction one’s life can take when
we spent almost a month on the story of Joseph, of the techno-color dream coat
fame. Then we brought down the walls of Jericho, talked about trying hard not
to label people, and we made a lot of joyful noise, some of it even musical,
when we covered Psalm 100, and for Lent we challenged kids to give up stuff rather
than one thing. We aimed to collect 40 items for the 40 days of Lent and they
went above and beyond—way above and beyond – and donated it all to
the church flea market. ...
The last few weeks we’ve talked a lot about
prayer:
“1 Thess. 5:17, pray without ceasing—like breathing – something
you don’t even think about.
“And John 14:14, ask me for anything in my name and I will do it—however
it might not be the answer you’re looking for (like a video game or cell
phone)
“Mostly we talked about the fact that when all else fails, if everything
is out of your control and there seems like there is nothing you can do, there
is always one thing you can do—pray.”
(After adventure bibles were given to young people, and after they shared a poem
with the congregation, the diaconate presented Chris with a gift certificate
to the Blue Ox and a beautiful hydrangea plant, and then all those in CE went
to their classes for a game and for ice cream sundaes. Thanks, Chris and Kittie,
and everyone who helped with Christian Ed this last church year!)
