Reflection

“Confirmation”

On Sunday, May 20th, six of our young people ~ Walker, Damon and Turner Christie, Ryan Frauenholz, Chris Moleti, and Eric Castetter ~ will be welcomed into full member-ship of our church.

They will be “making their confirmation,” a rite of passage from a faith given to them by their parents, to a faith they have explored during the past year and are now ready to claim as their own.

They will also be joined by Chris Stevens and Molly Cohen, adult members of the class, who asked to be part of the studies this year as they didn’t have a confirmation experience when they were younger.

In our times meeting together, we explored the history of the Christian faith through the millennia, and the history of our denomination, the United Church of Christ, as well as the history of NVC. We covered the books of the Bible, and the basic stories of our Christian faith, talked about worship and sacrements, and each of the members of the Confirmation Class is writing a personal statement of faith.

Faith is a journey we all share, with “mile markers” along the way to help us think about the way we live our lives, and the choices we make, and how we’re affected and transformed by God’s ongoing care for creation and for us.

This journey of faith is like a trip we might take that it has a beginning point, our birth, and a destination, with an ever closer relationship with God.

Yet there are no ready made maps for the journey, and no “one size fits all” answers about how we each are able to use our faith, to live with integrity and care.

As our confirmation class stands before us on the 20th, their words and affirmations can challenge each of us to think about our own journeys of faith, remembering the scriptures and shared experiences that have helped us navigate through life’s difficulties and joys, helpful us make faithful choices.

Faith is journey that we needn’t make alone. We have our relationship with God and with each other.

Blessings on the way! Rev. Larry
